Tips To Prevent Unnecessary Sewing Machine Repairs

Sewing machines are not only functional but also highly convenient appliances to have in the home. Owning one can save you lots of money when it comes to minor repairs on your clothes as well as creating outfits for school recitals, Halloween and more. However, if it is not well maintained, then you will find yourself plagued with regular sewing machine repairs. In order to keep your sewing machine functioning at optimum, you need to carry out several maintenance measures. These not only will prevent unnecessary repairs, but will also enhance the lifespan of your appliances. Here are some handy tips to preventing unnecessary sewing machine repairs.

Keep the throat plate clean

The throat plate refers to the piece of metal that is attached under the foot of the machine. It is recommended to regularly take it out and thoroughly clean it. To do this, use a screwdriver and unscrew it from its position. Ensure that you keep all its screws in a safe place so that you do not have any trouble putting it back into position. Once the throat place is removed, use an old toothbrush to clean out all the debris and grime that has accumulated on the throat plate. If you own a small vacuum you could use this instead as it will be able to clear the dust in hard to reach places. Conclude the cleaning process by wiping it down with a moist cloth before screwing it back into position. You should also ensure the bobbin area is clean too.

Keep your sewing machine sufficiently lubricated

Another maintenance measure that would help prevent unnecessary repairs is keeping your appliance sufficiently lubricated. Take note that you should only use oil designed for sewing machines to carry out this lubrication. If the movable parts do not have adequate lubrication, friction will form and this can cause your appliance to overheat. Regular overheating will reduce the lifespan of your appliance and could lead to complete breakdown. Before lubricating the movable parts, ensure there are no stray threads or dust that have been caught in them. Once you are done with the lubricating process, sew some stitches onto a fabric you can discard. This will ensure any excess oil is removed and will not be transferred onto future sewing materials that you will use.

Keep the sewing area spick and span

A dirty work area can cause you unnecessary problems with your sewing machine. This is because loose fibres and discarded thread can easily make their way into the appliance and cause clogs at some of its movable parts. To ensure your appliance is not at risk at this, always strive to keep a clean workspace.
